Director of Engineering

to lead and grow our high-impact Backend Data teams powering the core data infrastructure and backend systems at the heart of Citymapper and Via’s TransitTech platform. You’ll oversee the reliability, scalability and performance of backend services that handle real-time transport data, user data and critical platform features used by millions of users worldwide. In this role, you’ll set technical direction, drive architectural decisions, and champion best practices. You’ll work closely with product and engineering leaders to deliver robust solutions, and you’ll be responsible for attracting, developing and mentoring exceptional backend engineers.What You’ll Do:Lead and execute on a long term vision and strategy for the Citymapper backend teamsDrive the technical direction and roadmap, working closely with product leadership to prioritize initiatives and deliver on business objectivesCoach, support and provide feedback for your direct reports to positively impact their career development and growthAct as a subject matter expert, providing guidance and thought leadership to teams within Citymapper and ViaImprove engineering processes and practicesCreate a culture of excellence, innovation, and inclusionWho You Are:10+ years of experience in managing and leading backend teams—including evaluating technologies, work methods, architecture and designMinimum of 8 years of solid experience building complex backend projects and/or data pipelinesBSc in Computer Science, Mathematics, or any related degreeAn all-around team player and self-motivated individualPassion for code craftsmanshipExperience working on high-scale, production-grade projectsA strong leader with the ability to inspire, motivate, and mentor team members to achieve their full potentialExcellent communication and collaboration skills, with the ability to effectively communicate technical concepts to non-technical stakeholdersCompensation and Benefits:Becoming part of a company that was awarded for its commitment to social goodWe are one of 17 Ventures That Embody the U.N.’s 17 Sustainable Development GoalsInc.
