Consultant in Sexual Health and HIV | Bedfordshire Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust

OverviewLuton Sexual Health is seeking a Consultant to join the well-established Luton Sexual Health Service as an addition to the existing team of four Consultants and one Specialty doctor. The appointee will need to demonstrate wide experience in all aspects of sexual health including HIV inpatient and outpatient management, Genito-Urinary Medicine and contraception provision. There will be an opportunity to develop a subspecialist interest and to support the further development of the Luton Sexual Health service.
Responsibilities
Provide advice, screening, diagnosis and treatment of patients with STIs including HIV infection and specialist contraception services including LARC, in conjunction with the existing consultants.
Contribute to the continued development of integrated sexual health services in line with national policy, local commissioning arrangements and evidence-based best practice.
Help with innovations and service developments to achieve local/national targets, develop/expand outreach services, increase access and optimise cost efficiency.
Provide clinical supervision for the multidisciplinary team alongside other consultants.
Participate in Undergraduate and Postgraduate teaching, including training of specialty trainees and nursing staff.
Share equitable responsibilities with colleagues and contribute to department governance.
Provide cover for inpatient referrals and on-call telephone advice to support Saturday clinics (on a 1:4 basis); cover for colleagues during periods of absence; maintain continuing responsibility for patient care and departmental functioning.
Working Arrangements
The post will include 6 Programmed Activities per week: 5 Direct Clinical Care (DCC) and 1 Supporting Professional Activity (SPA).
Approximately 3 outpatient clinics per week: 2 integrated sexual health clinics (including LARC procedures) and 1 HIV clinic; remaining PAs for administration, CME/CPD, audit, clinical governance, teaching and training.
Out of hours availability for telephone advice on Saturdays from 9am–5pm on a 1:4 basis; provision of cover for Saturday Sexual Health clinics may be required on occasion.

Job Purpose and Requirements
Maintain the highest clinical standards in the management of all patients at Luton and Dunstable University Hospital NHS FT.
Share management responsibilities with colleagues in Luton Sexual Health; participate in teaching and training of medical staff, healthcare professionals in primary care, nursing staff and medical students.
Participate in Clinical Governance and audit; engage in continuing professional development (CPD).
Develop a subspecialist interest in line with departmental policy to expand services.
Attend regional audit and specialty group meetings and local network meetings as core member or cover as appropriate.
Work with local managers, GPs and other colleagues to ensure efficient service operation; participate in audit and governance activities; develop a research interest compatible with service focus where possible.
Work according to the terms and conditions of the new consultant contract; comply with Trust Health and Safety policies.
Additional InformationThis advert closes on Monday 22 Sep 2025. Vacancies may close earlier if a sufficient number of applications are received. All new staff will be subject to a 6-month probationary period. Travel between hospital sites may be required. The Trust may require job plan adjustments across sites in the region as part of its Integrated Care System activities. A regional contract history applies and there may be opportunities to deliver care in community settings in line with the Trust’s strategy.
