OverviewWe have an exciting opportunity for a data enthusiast who possesses a combination of leadership, governance and technical skills.
In this role you will be responsible for overseeing the strategic direction of data governance, data quality and knowledge management across the organisation. Reporting to the Chief Data Officer you will make sure that all data, including the company register, is treated as a critical asset, that risks are managed and governance frameworks are robust so the data is reliable, trusted and protected.
You will lead a team of specialists in data governance, data quality, data protection and information management. You will be working with our Information Asset Owners at Board level as well as external stakeholders to embed the right data culture, ensure data literacy and promote continuous improvement.
Companies House is a critical public data organisation with a reputation for real time and open data. We curate data that plays a vital role in the UK economy as well as enhancing global transparency whilst the data itself has been estimated to be worth up to £3bn per annum. With the advent of the Economic Crime and Corporate Transparency Act we’re transforming how we manage the quality and governance of our data. We’re building new systems and services, and we need talented data leaders to help us get there.
As Head of Data Management, you’ll support new strategic objectives that include making our data authoritative, preventing and disrupting economic crime and enabling seamless services for our users.
Responsibilities
Strategy and Governance.
Develop, maintain and lead the implementation of data management and governance strategies, policies, standards and frameworks to raise our overall data maturity. Ensure alignment with Government-wide approaches such as “Data Ownership in Government guidance” and Government Knowledge and Information Management (GKIM) best practices.
Data Asset Oversight.
Work with Service Owners, Data Owners and Digital teams to oversee the overall data lifecycle from acquisition, through storage, sharing, use and retention. Drive to raise standards, integrity and ultimately the value of our data to meet the needs of internal and external users.
Compliance, Risk and Assurance.
Identify, assess and manage data risks including quality, privacy and ethical use. Ensure compliance with UK GDPR, Functional Standards and any data sharing agreements with 3rd parties.
Culture and Capability.
Represent our Chief Data Officer in key decision-making forums, resolving strategic issues and ensuring the interests of data. This includes engaging with data owners and other stakeholders from digital, security, operations and policy (among others). Champion data literacy, information management and data communities of practice
Team Leadership.
Lead the development of a high-performing and highly influential team of data governance, data quality, data protection and information rights specialists. Oversee workload, performance, learning and wellbeing as well as fostering an inclusive and collaborative working environment.
Working hoursThis is a full time position of 37 hours per week. For any candidates interested in part time, the minimum hours per week we would be able to accommodate due to the nature of the role and team structure, is 30 hours/4 days.

To be eligible for this role you also need to meet our Nationality requirements which are outlined below and also successful candidates must meet the security requirements for Security Clearance (SC) before they can be appointed. To gain (SC) you will need to have been a UK resident for a minimum of 3 years out of the last 5 years.
Companies House also cannot offer Visa sponsorship to candidates through this campaign.
Person specificationIn this role you will need a blend of strategic, technical, people and governance skills. We are looking for a candidate who demonstrates most, if not all, of the following:
Data governance and quality.
Proven experience in leading data governance or data management at a senior level. This includes, making far reaching decisions on an organisation''s data and driving out increased data maturity. Strong breadth and depth of understanding of critical data concepts including cataloguing, modelling, quality, metadata management, master data management and reference data management. Additionally, experience of knowledge management and data protection disciplines including documents and records management.
Technical knowledge and experience.
Relevant experience using typical tools and technologies to drive best practice in data and information management for a whole organisation. This might include data warehousing, data quality monitoring and information management platforms as well as familiarity with key trends including the potential of AI.
Strategic Direction and Judgement.
Experience setting out or implementing a long term strategy and roadmap for data. This includes foreseeing emerging risks, managing trade-offs, operating in ambiguity and delivering measurable improvements. Able to bring strong judgement on issues where delivery needs to be balanced with quality, and where openness needs to be balanced with data protection.
Leadership and Stakeholder skills.
Track record of leading and motivating teams as well as building capability and skills. Able to build strong relationships with senior leadership teams in an organisation, communicate complex concepts in a compelling way to technical and non-technical audiences. Skilled at securing buy-in, using evidence and demonstrating strategic benefits.
