Job Title: School Chef Supervisor

Reports to: School Principal / Facilities or Catering Manager
Location: School Kitchen / Canteen
Position Type: Full-time / Term-time only (depending on setting)

Role Summary:

The School Chef Supervisor is responsible for the daily operations of the school kitchen, ensuring nutritious, cost-effective, and compliant meals are prepared and served to students and staff. This role combines culinary expertise with team leadership and administrative responsibilities to maintain high standards of food quality, hygiene, and safety.

Key Responsibilities:

1. Food Preparation & Cooking:

  • Plan and prepare nutritious, balanced meals in line with government school food standards.

  • Cater to dietary requirements, allergies, and cultural food preferences.

  • Ensure meals are appealing, varied, and delivered on time.

2. Staff Supervision & Team Leadership:

  • Supervise, schedule, and support kitchen staff and assistants.

  • Conduct staff training on food safety, hygiene, and cooking procedures.

  • Promote a positive, efficient working environment.

3. Kitchen Management:

  • Oversee food stock control, ordering, and supplier relations.

  • Monitor kitchen cleanliness and compliance with health & safety regulations.

  • Maintain equipment and ensure maintenance is reported or carried out.

4. Administrative Duties:

  • Keep records of food temperatures, cleaning rotas, and stock inventories.

  • Assist with budgeting and cost control to ensure efficiency and minimal waste.

  • Work with school leadership to plan menus and respond to feedback.

Essential Skills & Qualifications:
  • NVQ Level 2 or 3 in Professional Cookery or equivalent.

  • Level 2 Food Hygiene and Safety Certificate (Level 3 preferred).

  • Previous experience in a similar supervisory or head chef role.

  • Understanding of food allergens, nutrition, and portion control.

  • Strong organisational, communication, and leadership skills.

Desirable Attributes:
  • Passion for children’s health and well-being.

  • Experience working in educational or large catering settings.

  • First Aid certification and COSHH knowledge.

  • Ability to manage budgets and work under pressure.
