About the Provision

This specialist provision in Portsmouth is part of a wider Special School and Alternative Provision setting, supporting students with Social, Emotional and Mental Health (SEMH) needs and those unable to access mainstream education.

The setting offers a nurturing and highly supportive environment where students are encouraged to rebuild confidence, re-engage with learning, and achieve meaningful outcomes.

  • Students aged 11–16, many with Education, Health and Care Plans (EHCPs)

About the Role

We are seeking a resilient and enthusiastic PE Teacher with a passion for supporting students with SEN and SEMH needs. You will deliver engaging and inclusive Physical Education sessions, helping students develop confidence, teamwork, and positive behaviours through sport and physical activity.

This role places a strong emphasis on engagement, emotional regulation, and relationship-building, using physical activity as a tool to support wellbeing and re-engagement in education.

Key Responsibilities

  • Plan and deliver adapted PE lessons suited to small groups and individual needs
  • Use sport and physical activity to support emotional regulation and engagement
  • Build positive, trusting relationships with students
  • Promote teamwork, resilience, and self-confidence through structured activities
  • Manage behaviour effectively using de-escalation and supportive strategies
  • Create a safe, inclusive, and structured learning environment
  • Work closely with SEN staff, pastoral teams, and support staff

Ideal Candidate

  • Qualified Teacher Status (QTS) or relevant PE/SEN teaching experience
  • Experience working with SEMH students (desirable but not essential)
  • Energetic, patient, and adaptable approach
  • Strong behaviour management and de-escalation skills
  • Ability to motivate and engage students who may be disengaged from education
  • A restorative and trauma-informed approach
  • Strong teamwork and communication skills

Benefits

  • Competitive daily rate (£168–£250 depending on experience)
  • Supportive and specialist working environment
  • Opportunity to make a meaningful impact through sport and physical activity
  • Ongoing support from a dedicated consultant
  • Access to CPD and training, including SEMH and behaviour strategies
  • Long-term and permanent opportunities available
