The Royal Orthopaedic Hospital NHS Foundation Trust (ROH) is a specialist hospital in Birmingham, UK. This is an exciting opportunity to join the Board of our Trust and help improve patient care.

About the roleAs a Non-executive Director you will work alongside executives as an equal member of the unitary Board, sharing responsibility for the Board’s decisions and the organisation’s success in leading the improvement of our healthcare services for patients.

Main duties of the job

Chair the Trust’s Finance and Performance Committee and work across professional boundaries, providing challenge and multi-disciplinary perspectives, with a public-facing role in building the trust’s brand in musculoskeletal and orthopaedics.

Support development of commercial offering and culture around continuous improvement as part of ROH’s strategy rethink.

Formulate plans and strategy

– provide independent judgement, external perspectives and challenge to executives; influence strategy and performance; help set values and standards; ensure stakeholder and community obligations are understood and balanced.

Shape culture and capability

– ensure dignity and respect for patients; promote a healthy, inclusive culture; support equality and open access to the board for concerns; confirm board members are fit and proper.

Develop process, structures and utilise intelligence

– uphold probity, governance, and statutory requirements; monitor management performance and statutory duties; ensure accurate financial information and robust controls; challenge information and performance data.

Support engagement

– act in patients’ and public’s best interests; engage with staff, Governors, partners and stakeholders; represent the Trust with external partners and media as appropriate.

Ensure accountability

– set challenging objectives; drive efficiency and accountability; participate in key committees; hold the executive to account; contribute to remuneration decisions as appropriate.

Person specificationQualifications

Masters or equivalent professional qualification and/or experience

Evidence of continuous professional development

Skills and knowledge

Business acumen and commercial awareness; ability to recognise risks and opportunities with innovative and entrepreneurial thinking

Diplomatic, interpersonal and communication skills; ability to engage diverse audiences; inclusive decision-making

Ability to interpret and anticipate national government policy

Understanding of NHS performance measures and the strategic challenges facing the NHS

Experience

Collaborative, team-oriented style with inclusive board leadership

Strategic abilities with independent judgement, diplomacy and political astuteness

Experience at board level or equivalent with understanding of corporate governance and assurance
