Rubicon Consulting-is currently recruiting for an Estimator on a 6 Month Rolling Contract, based in Stafford

Role Summary

We are seeking an experienced Estimator to support the delivery of high-voltage electrical infrastructure projects focused on National Grid substations from 132kV and above. The role involves preparing accurate cost estimates for EPC and construction works including civil, electrical, and balance-of-plant activities associated with substation upgrades, extensions, and new builds.

The Estimator will work closely with engineering, procurement, commercial, and project management teams to develop competitive and technically robust tender submissions while ensuring alignment with National Grid standards and project specifications.

Key Responsibilities

  • Prepare detailed cost estimates and tender submissions for substation projects from 132kV to 400kV.
  • Analyse tender documentation, drawings, specifications, and scopes of work issued by National Grid or principal contractors.
  • Produce BOQs (Bills of Quantities) and pricing schedules for civil, electrical, and mechanical elements of substation works.
  • Obtain and evaluate supplier and subcontractor quotations for materials, plant, and specialist services.
  • Develop labour, plant, and material cost build-ups using historical data and current market rates.
  • Identify commercial risks and opportunities within tender documents and propose mitigation strategies.
  • Support the preparation of technical clarifications, value engineering proposals, and tender qualifications.
  • Work with engineering teams to understand design development, constructability, and scope requirements.
  • Maintain and update cost databases and estimating tools for high-voltage infrastructure projects.
  • Participate in tender review meetings and bid strategy discussions.
  • Assist in handover of successful bids to project delivery teams, ensuring clear understanding of cost assumptions and scope.
  • Ensure estimates comply with National Grid specifications, safety standards, and regulatory requirements.

Requirements

  • Proven experience as an Estimator within the power transmission or high-voltage electrical sector.
  • Experience working on substation projects (132kV, 275kV, or 400kV).
  • Strong understanding of substation construction, including:
  • Civil works (foundations, ducting, drainage, earthworks)
  • Electrical installation (AIS/GIS equipment, transformers, switchgear)
  • Cable installation and containment
  • Protection and control systems
  • Ability to interpret engineering drawings, specifications, and technical documents.
  • Experience with National Grid standards and tender processes is highly desirable.
  • Proficiency with estimating software, Excel, and cost management tools.
  • Strong commercial awareness and risk identification skills.
  • Excellent communication and coordination skills across technical and commercial teams.
