Health Care Assistant

OverviewBrinsworth and Whiston Medical Centre is currently looking for a dedicated and enthusiastic Health Care Assistant to join our friendly and supportive practice team. This is a fantastic opportunity to play a key role in delivering high-quality patient care and supporting the clinical team across a wide range of HCA duties.
ResponsibilitiesWe are looking for a compassionate, reliable, and motivated Health Care Assistant (HCA) for 25 to 28 hours per week, to join our supportive and dynamic practice team. In this key role, you will work alongside our GPs and Nurses to deliver high-quality care to our patients across a range of clinical and administrative tasks.
Clinical Duties
Conduct new patient health checks and NHS Health Checks
Perform venepuncture and prepare pathology samples for collection
Carry out baseline observations including blood pressure, pulse rate, temperature, pulse oximetry, and blood glucose levels
Record weight, height, and calculate BMI, entering data accurately into the clinical system
Facilitate both routine and 24-hour blood pressure monitoring
Undertake wound care, dressings, and other clinical tasks as required
Administer vaccinations under PSD (e.g. flu, B12, shingles, pneumonia)
Carry out ECGs as requested by clinicians
Perform ear syringing and compression bandaging as needed
Support INR testing and recording
Clinical Environment and Infection Control
Ensure all clinical rooms are well-stocked, clean, and prepared for each session
Monitor and record fridge temperatures twice daily
Dispose of clinical waste appropriately and replace sharps bins in line with IPC policy

Job Description and ResponsibilitiesClinical Duties
Measure and record height, weight, and calculate Body Mass Index (BMI)
Monitor and document blood pressure, pulse, and temperature
Perform venepuncture procedures
Conduct and record electrocardiograms (ECGs)
Carry out urinalysis and interpret results
Measure and record peak flow rates
Perform diabetic foot examinations
Conduct NHS Health Checks in accordance with current guidelines
Provide smoking cessation support and advice
Administer flu and pneumococcal vaccinations under a Patient Specific Direction (PSD)
Administer vitamin B12 injections under PSD
Carry out ambulatory blood pressure monitoring (ABPM)
Recognise and respond to changes in patients’ conditions, reporting any concerns to the GP or nurse as appropriate
Administrative And Support Duties
Maintain accurate stock control and order clinical supplies as required
Record and monitor fridge temperatures in line with protocols
Maintain awareness and adherence to national infection prevention and control standards, cleanliness guidelines, and all regulatory, contractual, and professional requirements
Ensure patient confidentiality is maintained at all times
Manage recall systems for clinics to ensure timely follow-ups
Contribute to service improvement and suggest areas for development
Process and manage patient samples in accordance with safety protocols
Follow safe sharps management procedures, including appropriate training, use, storage, and disposal
Comply with waste management and spillage control procedures
QualificationsEssential
Minimum of GCSEs (or equivalent) including English and Maths
NVQ Level 2 in Health and Social Care (or equivalent qualification) is highly desirable
Training and Certifications:
Basic Life Support (BLS) and First Aid training
Phlebotomy (Venepuncture) training
Vaccination training (e.g., Flu, B12, Pneumococcal) under Patient Specific Direction (PSD)
Desirable
NVQ Level 3 in Health and Social Care
