Sheridan Maine is currently working in partnership with a dynamic and growing Hertfordshire-based organisation to recruit an Assistant Accountant to join their finance team. This is a fantastic opportunity for a detail-oriented and proactive finance professional to take ownership of key transactional finance processes while playing a pivotal role in month-end reporting, payroll, and continuous process improvement.

This position offers exposure across all areas of finance operations, making it ideal for someone looking to broaden their experience and develop within a supportive and fast-paced environment.

Key Responsibilities of the Assistant Accountant:

• Manage accounts receivable processes, including invoice processing, credit control support, and aged debtor reporting
• Handle accounts payable activities, including invoice processing, payment runs, and supplier statement reconciliations
• Support payroll processing on a monthly basis, ensuring accuracy of employee payments and data maintenance
• Assist with statutory payroll requirements including PAYE, NI, pensions, and year-end reporting
• Support month-end close processes, including journals, accruals, prepayments, and reconciliations
• Reconcile key balance sheet accounts, including bank, sales, and purchase ledgers
• Maintain accurate financial records and ensure strong audit trails are in place
• Support VAT returns and ensure correct tax treatment of transactions
• Assist with the use and maintenance of finance systems, ensuring data accuracy and integrity
• Support internal controls and compliance with accounting standards and company policies
• Work collaboratively with internal teams to resolve financial queries and support business operations
• Provide ad-hoc financial information and reporting to support management decision-making

The successful Assistant Accountant:

• AAT qualified (or working towards) or equivalent relevant experience
• Experience in a finance or accounting role with exposure to transactional finance
• Strong understanding of core finance processes including AP, AR and reconciliations
• Highly organised with strong attention to detail and accuracy
• Proactive, adaptable and willing to support a busy finance team
