Overview

Spectrum is a not-for-profit CIC committed to reducing health inequalities and improving health outcomes for the most disadvantaged within our community. We are a values-based organisation with the patient at the heart of what we do. We are looking for a salaried GP to join our MDT, delivering a primary care clinic within HMP Forest Bank. A session consists of 8 appointments (15 minutes each) and are face to face. Presentations are aligned with community primary care to deliver equivalence of care within our clinics. No prior prison experience is required as you will be given training for the role, though prior experience is preferable. The GP most suited to this role is passionate about reducing health inequalities, empathetic, and enjoys working within an MDT. Leadership qualities and openness to a different, paced form of primary care are desirable.

Main duties

GPs are required to provide reception cover from 5pm-9pm Monday to Friday (to be discussed).

The post holder will provide face-to-face clinical services including the medical component of prison reception assessment care, appointed, unscheduled and emergency care services to inpatients and the segregation unit. Core responsibilities include:

Full clinical assessment of patients; formulate differential diagnoses and management plans

Pharmacological assessment and prescribing; request and interpretation of clinical investigations

Appropriate referrals to other specialist areas and secondary care services; information and advice for informed treatment choices

Medical assessment and monitoring of chronic diseases in line with NICE guidance and local policy

Appropriate end-of-life care under clinical supervision from palliative care services when needed

Maintain up-to-date knowledge to formulate robust care plans for the complex health needs of vulnerable groups, with emphasis on substance misuse and offender health in a secure environment

Psychiatric assessment, diagnosis and management of prisoners with serious mental ill health will be the responsibility of the specialist mental health provider

All GPs are expected to have evidence-based clinical capabilities to meet the needs of this setting.
