Overview

We are seeking a highly motivated Sports Scientist with a strong background in data science to join the McLaren Formula One Racing Team. The role leads human data science projects, utilising advanced analytical techniques to optimise team performance and minimise fatigue impact. The successful candidate will translate complex data into actionable insights that inform team training, strategy, and wellbeing. This is a stand-alone role with no direct reports, requiring collaboration with stakeholders at all levels and the ability to work self-sufficiently. Occasional travel is required. Based at the McLaren Technology Centre with potential for some hybrid working.Principal Accountabilities

Primary Mission:

Minimise the impact of fatigue on performance. Drive sustained human performance excellence across the F1 team by applying cutting-edge sports science, data analysis, and tailored interventions. Enhance physical and cognitive readiness across multiple races and time zones in a demanding environment.Project Leadership:

Lead on an innovative human data science project, implementing an athlete management system to diagnose and prevent fatigue within the McLaren F1 Team.Data Collection:

Maintain data continuity into the athlete management system, develop interfaces for subjective data, conduct fatigue assessments, perform fitness testing, and provide technical support for users (e.g., wearable connectivity). Manage risks such as surveillance fatigue.Data Analysis and Interpretation:

Analyse and interpret human performance data from multiple sources to identify trends, improvement areas, and fatigue risk.Alignment:

Align with team objectives and timelines while collaborating with medical, human performance, and operations teams.Performance Optimization:

Develop and implement data-driven strategies to prevent fatigue-related injuries or performance loss, integrating human factors across groups within the F1 Team.Technology Integration:

Evaluate and integrate technologies and methodologies for fatigue data collection and analysis.Communication and Reporting:

Clearly communicate findings and preventative recommendations through reports, presentations, and one-on-one sessions; educate team members on latest sport science practices.Research and Development:

Stay aware of latest research and innovations to maintain a competitive advantage in human performance. The role focuses on preventing fatigue in real-world settings, not on conducting research.Knowledge, Skills and Experience

Master’s or Ph.D. in Sports Science, Exercise Physiology, Data Science, or related field. BASES or equivalent accreditation.Proven performance delivery in sports science within high-performance environments.Strong analytical skills with proficiency in data analysis tools and programming languages.Experience analysing physiological determinants across different sports and aligning support accordingly.Expertise with human performance monitoring technologies, wearable data collection, athlete management systems, physiological testing and monitoring tools.Excellent communication and collaboration skills; ability to present complex data clearly across multidisciplinary teams.Experience in project management and system implementation.Excellent presentation and communication skills for conveying complex data to varied audiences.Personal Attributes
